Pattie Boyd當時是Beatles樂隊的結他手George Harrison的妻子。在1968年，Eric因參與了George的專輯《All Things Must Pass》的錄製，兩人成為了知心好友，但Eric竟情不自禁戀上了Pattie，並到了痴迷的地步。
面對這段無法自拔的不倫之戀，Eric把內心的煎熬凝煉成〈Layla〉及以後多首創作，同時也墮進了由海洛英和可卡因築成的深淵......
在Eric Clapton的自傳中曾提及在他組成樂隊Derek and the Dominos時，大部分創作受對Pattie的狂熱而驅使，而且Derek and the Dominos的第一張專輯內的歌曲都是講述二人的關係。〈Layla〉便是第一首、也是最關鍵的歌曲。
〈Layla〉取材自波斯傳說Layla and Majnun的故事，講述月亮公主蕾拉(Layla)被父王許配給她所不愛的人，害深愛蕾拉的男主角失戀發狂 (故事內容在這裡)。Eric便利用Layla來作為Pattie的投射，把這段壓抑的愛意在歌中釋放，成為了現今人稱「史上最悲壯的情歌」。
